Bread and Circuses
Any impartial observer can easily see that we are in a planetary climate emergency. The only people who continue to deny it are capitalists, fascists, and those who support them.
________________________________

The surge in ocean temperatures to record-breaking levels in 2023 and 2024 is a sign that the pace of climate change has accelerated, say researchers.

Global ocean temperatures hit record highs for 450 days straight in 2023 and early 2024. Although some of the extra heat can be explained by an El Niño weather pattern emerging in the Pacific Ocean, about 44% of the record warmth is due to the world’s oceans absorbing heat from the sun at an accelerating rate, according to Chris Merchant at the University of Reading, UK.

Merchant and his colleagues used satellite data to analyse ocean warming over the past four decades, concluding that the rate of warming has more than quadrupled since 1985.

The team says this rapid acceleration is down to a sharp change in Earth’s energy imbalance (EEI), a measure of how much heat is being trapped in the atmosphere. EEI has roughly doubled since 2010, causing the oceans to soak up much more heat now than they used to.

Based on their analysis, Merchant and his team predict that the rate of ocean warming could continue to increase rapidly in the coming decades. “If the EEI trend extrapolates into the future, then we can expect as much warming in the next 20 years as we have had in the last 40 years, which is quite a marked acceleration,” says Merchant.
________________________________

FULL STORY -- https://www.newscientist.com/article/2465689-surge-in-ocean-heat-is-a-sign-climate-change-is-accelerating/

#Science #Environment #Climate #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #ClimateEmergency

Bread and Circuses
Concluding excerpts from the transcript of an important talk on “The Tipping Points of Climate Change” given recently by climate scientist Johan Rockström.
🧵4/4
________________________________

To summarize, there is no 1.5 degrees Celsius delivery on the Paris Agreement by only phasing out fossil fuels. We also need to come back into the safe operating space of nature-based biodiversity, all the planetary boundaries of nature.

And we have the solutions. We know that solving the planet crisis is not utopia. It's not fantasy. We have the solutions for a secure, stable future for humanity.

What are those transformations? It's a rapid transition away from fossil fuels. It is a transition towards circular business models. It is transitioning towards healthy diets from sustainable food systems. And it's not only halting loss of nature, it's also scaling the regeneration and restoration of marine systems, soils, forests and wetlands.

Now I was nervous already in 2020 when we entered this decisive decade and had to cut global emissions by half by 2030. Halfway into this decade, the road is steeper than ever. It's steeper than ever. This is what really, really concerns us. That we have a situation where we now need to move so fast.
________________________________

We know the answers. We know the crucial choice that must be made. It’s time now to turn away from capitalism, from economic exploitation and social injustice. We need system change.

FULL PRESENTATION ▶️ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vl6VhCAeEfQ

#Science #Environment #Climate #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis

Bread and Circuses
More excerpts from the transcript of a talk on “The Tipping Points of Climate Change” given by climate scientist Johan Rockström.
🧵3/4
_______________________________

We are now at a point where we are forced to ask the following question: Are we at risk of pushing the planet out of where we’ve been since we left the last Ice Age, the extraordinarily stable Holocene state?

If we pushed ourselves outside, drifting away unstoppably towards a hothouse Earth where we get self-amplified warming and losing life support on Earth, what could take us there? [First graphic below]

If we cross tipping points — big systems like the Greenland ice sheet, the overturning of heat in the North Atlantic, the coral reef systems, the Amazon rainforest, and others — push these systems too far, and they will flip over from a desired state that helps us,
to a state that will self-amplify in the wrong direction, going from cooling and dampening to self-amplifying and warming.

The health of the planet must be kept intact. We must have a planet that crosses no tipping points. That is why we need planetary boundaries, the boundary framework that defines the nine Earth system processes that regulates the stability and resilience of the entire planet: climate, biodiversity, nitrogen, phosphorus, land, fresh water, air pollutants and chemicals. That is the challenge.

[Second graphic] What shall we do to avoid these unmanageable outcomes? Well, the IPCC is clear on the pathway. To stay under 1.5 degrees Celsius, to avoid crossing tipping points, we need to operate within the global carbon budget that gives us a chance of holding at 1.5.

What remains for us is only 200 billion tons of carbon dioxide that we can continue emitting to have a 50 percent chance of holding at 1.5. We emit today 40 billion tons of carbon dioxide per year, giving us five years at current rates of emission before we've consumed the budget. We are seriously running out of time.
_______________________________

Part four will follow soon.

FULL PRESENTATION ▶️ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vl6VhCAeEfQ

#Science #Environment #Climate #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis

Bread and Circuses
Here is another excerpt from the transcript of an important talk on “The Tipping Points of Climate Change” given by climate scientist Johan Rockström.
🧵2/4
___________________________

But it's not only carbon dioxide. Any parameter that matters for human well-being and our economies looks the same. [First graphic below]

Here you have it, linear change up until the 1950s, then we go into the great acceleration. And this is what we're seeing across overconsumption of fresh water, the sixth mass extinction of species, over-putrefying our freshwater systems with nitrogen and phosphorus, all of it undermining the stability of the planet.

We are seeing that this is now causing impacts everywhere. We're seeing bigger and bigger invoices being sent by the Earth system onto societies across the entire world, in droughts, floods, disease patterns, heat waves, and huge storms, scientifically attributed to human-caused climate change.

[Second graphic] We've had a 10,000-year period where our civilizations have developed, where we've had the enormous privilege of a planet at 14 degrees Celsius, plus or minus 0.5 degrees Celsius. That's the Holocene since we left the last ice age.

If you look three million years back, we never exceeded two degrees Celsius. That's the warmest temperature on Earth during the entire Quaternary. I call this the “corridor of life.” Is it surprising that we scientists are getting really, really nervous?
___________________________

Part three will follow soon.

FULL PRESENTATION ▶️ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vl6VhCAeEfQ

#Science #Environment #Climate #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis

Abrupt changes are occurring in a way that is far beyond the realistic expectations in science.

What worries us most is this: we are starting to see an *acceleration* of warming over the past 50 years. It was 0.18 degrees Celsius per decade from 1970 to 2010, but then from 2014 onwards, it abruptly jumps up to 0.26 per decade.

If we follow this path, we will crash through two degrees Celsius within 20 years and hit three degrees Celsius by the year 2100, a disastrous outcome.
_______________________________

In the images below (slides from the talk), you can plainly see the acceleration of warming that has Rockström and other scientists so worried.

I’ll post more from this talk in a few minutes. 🧵1/4

FULL PRESENTATION ▶️ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vl6VhCAeEfQ

#Science #Environment #Climate #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis

AnarchoNinaAnalyzes
Recently I wrote about why I kinda like George Monbiot's work when he describes the problem of capitalism and climate crisis, but also think he's fucking delusional if he believes trying to tax rich people is gonna be enough to get us out of the ecological nightmare we're facing down because of rich people and capitalism:

https://www.ninaillingworth.com/2024/08/03/nina-bytes-no-half-measures/

Nina-Bytes: No Half Measures

"Look, there’s nothing at all wrong with Monbiot’s argument that billionaire oligarchs should bear a greater taxation burden than they do now because it’s going to cost a lot of money for the human species to solve the problems primarily created by the capitalist activities of, you guessed it, billionaire oligarchs. It’s just that when George’s article goes on to explain that those very same oligarchs operate with impunity on a global scale, have enough money to literally buy the governments of our nation states, and clearly have no intention of ceasing to push our species right off the ecological cliff for profit, it becomes incredibly obvious that not only will they never agree to pay such a tax, but even if they did it wouldn’t do enough to address the fatal power imbalances he’s talking about here; facts that Monbiot himself more or less concedes in this very article."

#Capitalism #ClimateCrisis #Monbiot #TaxTheRich #Revolution

Bread and Circuses
Here is Part 4 of the statement posted yesterday by Roger Hallam…
🧵4/4
_______________________

What does it say about civil liberties if people are imprisoned for making speeches? I offered an alternative explanation for what happened – that a Murdoch-owned newspaper, the Sun, had a journalist who just wanted to make a film of my arrest and so recorded and leaked the public Zoom meeting to the police.

Let me remind you that for this I have already been to prison for four months in 2022 without a trial and have been tagged with an 11pm curfew ever since.

Even during my closing statement, the judge tried to shut me down but I went on. I argued that I just wanted the jury to hear the defendants for a few hours and to present them with three or four expert witnesses to give the whole evidence.

Of course, I wasn’t allowed to mention the ‘C-word’ but the jury had heard the undisputed facts of existential threats – which between them describe an unimaginable harm lasting tens of thousands of years. I simply asked them to consider doing what many other juries have done, let good people go free when they are persecuted by the state.

This was about facts, not beliefs. Without facts, this is not a ‘functioning democracy’ but a government that is facilitating the destruction and death of our population. That’s why UN people sat in on the trial – because we do NOT have a functioning democratic state. If you go and ask people in the street, many would laugh at the idea that they have a say in how this country is run. Plenty of expert witnesses would come and tell us we live in a capitalist democracy, a democracy for the rich. In other words no kind of democracy at all.

In the end, I said to the jury that if I speak the truth to them I may end up in prison. If the lawyers speak the truth to them they may lose their jobs. If the jury speaks the truth, nothing will happen to them. I begged them to consult their conscience and ask themselves if they were really sure we didn’t have a reasonable excuse.

The result of this kangaroo court?

You have guessed it. The jury representative stood up the next day, and one by one gave guilty verdicts for all of us, all unanimous.

After the verdict, the judge accused me of fraud and ‘grifting’ because my social media post asked for donations towards ‘court fees’. A slight miswording by my friend who writes the posts, as there were no such fees in this trial. But of course, there are massive costs around the whole legal team supporting us and the consequences of going to prison. Please donate towards them at https://chuffed.org/project/support-the-five-on-trial-for-conspiracy.

The judge then slandered me by proposing to the jurors that if I was telling lies to obtain money, I might be telling people other lies, and maybe other protesters outside the court were being told lies. He said one of them had been an elderly man hard of hearing and was worried I was exploiting vulnerable people. The public gallery gasped. The man in question was a retired GP in full possession of his faculties with a keen knowledge of the issues – what an insult, and what baseless accusations.

To top it off, he said I was 'incapable of introspection'. Guess I’ll have plenty of time for that now…

The judge finished his attacks by then personally thanking the jury for not being ‘intimidated’ and said “Well done”. He said he didn’t care what we thought of him. He was just 'doing his job'.

This is the banality of evil all over again.

He claimed our conviction was just a result of our “single issue fanaticism”. Again, no bias there from a judge who is planning to fly off on holiday when @JustStop_Oil
are planning to disrupt airports…

Repression is increasing around the world. Amnesty just put out a report on the systematic state attacks on peaceful protest. Look it up.

Either we resist the the carbon elites' repression and build a true democracy, led by ordinary people in Citizen’s Assemblies, or Covid-like, ecological and economic shocks spark chaos and fascism. We've seen it over and over again.

It's time to say never again.

Never again will we let fascism produce a holocaust.

Never again we will fail to tell the whole truth: that we face the greatest holocaust ever known, a worldwide gas chamber of carbon that could kill us all.

Today it was me imprisoned for telling the truth.

Next, it could be you.

Join the resistance at http://juststopoil.org before it’s too late.
_______________________

That's Part 4 of 4.

#Science #Environment #Climate #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #ClimateAction #ClimateJustice
